Reinventing Workspaces for The Millennials

Reinventing Workspaces for The Millennials

Millennials are a growing demographic in every workplace. The millennial mindset is one that is independent, competitive and comfortable with starting from the bottom of the ladder. They challenge tradition, connect dots and collaborate with others to drive their own interests.

According to Intelligence Group, by 2020, 86 million millennials will be in the workplace, representing a 40 percent chunk of the workforce. Hence, business owners need to start adapting their workplace to the likes of Gen Z or risk being left behind in the race to attract and retain talent.

Millennials value flexibility and want work environments that merely enable that. Assigned workstations are becoming history as they usually prefer to work in areas that best meet their requirements during the course of their day. Millennials are happiest and the most productive when they have options and therefore employers need to watch out for office spaces that give their employees the freedom to adapt and work wherever they like.

When contemplating the perfect office layout office spaces with open ceilings and social amenities are most preferable. A study conducted by Acapture reported that Chinese, Indian and Japanese millennials valued innovative and creative environments. Moreover, after several experiments, researchers at the Journal of Consumer Research found that open ceilings seemed to foster a mindset of freedom, creativity, and abstraction.

Moreover, wellness programs are no longer looked upon as optional benefits. They have now become necessary. A study conducted in 2015 established that about 84 percent of millennials exercise at least once or twice a week making it critical for employers to integrate it into their work environment. In-house fitness centers fulfill their desire to lead a healthy life and also ensure work-life balance.
